Ebay aims for Japan market
Watch out, Yahoo! Japan auctions, here comes Ebay:
…a translation service will provide Japanese sellers with English versions of their product descriptions within a day at rates of 700 yen ($7.20) for up to 100 Japanese characters and 1,200 yen for up to 200. “The cost will be less than half that of conventional services,” Nikkei said.
The service will also provide translations to Japanese from English to allow sellers to handle questions from buyers, Nikkei said.
It said explanations on how to list a product will be available in Japanese on a new web site.
The paper said: “By screening delivery options, eBay expects to keep shipping charges to roughly half of regular rates.”
Ebay is already reporting a 30% increase in the number of Japanese registered Japanese users since it began the new services on April 1st. Fuji TV’s news report about Ebay (embedded above) is currently the most viewed news video on Yahoo! Japan News.

eBay already failed once in Japan. doubt this will do any better to be honest.
bracing for epic fail.
I’ve ordered a couple hundred cases of fepic ale for this special occasion.
Anyone know how I can sign up to be a translator?
i think its unfair they charge users for it to be translated, i think the translation must be a free service that should be available all the time. maybe for business they have to do it..
There has always been quite a few Japanese and Hong Kong sellers making items available to the US through e-bay.
actualy Ebay is dead in Europe. to many tax and brandmark atacks. to many scamers and way to much hackers lurking there.
so does every company have own webside. even polish china fake sellers. i dont see good future for this company in Japan.
I wouldn’t say it’s dead, but it’s definitely on the decline. Having more items from Japan in the international market could make eBay more interesting again for some people, but I doubt that the impact will be very big.
Oh for the love of god, STAY AWAY FROM EBAY/PAYPAL.
this is not going to work.. japanese sellers do not want or need to do business with non-japanese and are going to be unwilling anyway. if the business is large enough that they need to be selling overseas, they can establish an overseas branch.
this is going to fail like ebay already did in japan
