The North Korean launch

North Korea tried to launch a satellite into orbit today. The rocket passed over Japan without causing trouble, but no satellite made it into orbit.

Here’s a CNN news report about it:

Like so many other Western media outlets, CNN seemed to be under the mistaken impression that Japan had plans to shoot down any North Korean rocket. The Japanese had made it very clear that they would only use their missile defense system if something went wrong and it looked like debris or the rocket itself would fall in Japanese territory. Such a failure did not occur, so the JSDF made no attempt to shoot it down as it passed over Northern Japan.
