lol, it’s a lot of smoke and mirrors to me. All it concretely claims to be doing is identifying “right hand”. Out of how many options? Judging by the canned response of the robot, I’d say… 2 or so

They already have video game controllers that do things like this, but the best they can do is pick up a facial expression every now and then and only after hours and hours of frustrating training by the user.

Needless to say, this IS the future, but while the demo may be demonstrating respectable research findings it is a baby step at best. Now isn’t the time to get starry-eyed about the possibilities just because Honda’s team has good PR. We should find out that the technology is feasible (at all) before we start entertaining wild thought experiments.

This technology is not really new, only coupling it up with a program run by the ASIMO robot is.

Last year or so a computer device manufacturer showed a brain computer interface that seems to be even more sophisticated. I think it was shown at the GC. They demoed it with some simple games and it’s supposed to be used as a gaming controller, so it won’t be very expensive when it actually comes out.
