Secondhand smoke in Japan
JR may have banned smoking on its platforms in the Tokyo area, but as this NTV news clip reminds us, there are still designated smoking areas near the entrances of many stations and some stations have special smoking rooms:
An expert from the Japan Society for Tobacco Control is dispatched to the smoking area near the Hachiko exit of Shibuya station in Tokyo. Using a mysterious device that measures the level of smoke in the air, the man determines that the air around the smoking area is “very dangerous.” Even after walking a considerable distance to an area where the reporter cannot even smell smoke, the device still finds that the air is at a “dangerous” level.
A smoker interviewed says that he’d really be in trouble if it wasn’t for the continued existence of designated smoking areas.
