Ancient Colonel Sanders statue discovered in Osaka

March 11th, 2009 by James

Construction workers have discovered an old Colonel Sanders statue in the Dotonbori River in Osaka:

Colonel

The statue was taken from the front of a KFC store and thrown into the river during a wild celebration of a Hanshin Tigers baseball victory 24 years ago. The statue did not turn up during searches at that time, and for years some had blamed the Tigers’ many losses on “the curse of Colonel Sanders.”

His hands are missing. The Tigers are going to drop a lot of fly balls.

I’d like to know why did did they steal it and throw it in the river, but I’d love to know more who’s idea was it and how did they manage to convince everyone else to go along with the idea.

I’m glad they fished him out of the Dotonbori. The Colonel’s 11 secret curses and spices have haunted Osaka for too long.

It wasn’t just a “baseball victory,” but rather the Tigers’ lone Japan Series win in 1985. The incident is touched on briefly in Whiting’s You Gotta Have Wa.

(Grinz, the explanation given by Whiting is that people who resembled Tigers players were being encouraged to jump into the heavily polluted Dotonbori to celebrate their victory. There were no individuals present who resembled mustachioed gaijin series MVP Randy Bass, so…)

The Wikipwdia page for the Tigers also explains the incident pretty well.

Makes sense, Colonel Sanders/KFC and baseball go hand-in-hand, an insult to one is an insult to the other

It’s funny that he looks like he could easily be Japanese. I wonder if the sculptors intended that.
