City government voices support for illegal immigrant family
Another update in the story of Noriko Calderon, a child born in Japan to illegal immigrants from the Philippines:
The city council of Warabi, where the Calderon family resides, has requested that the national government consider Noriko’s situation and grant special residency to Noriko’s parents.
Yesterday, the foreign minister stated that a request for information about the case filed by the U.N. Human Rights Council will not alter the national government’s decision to deport Noriko’s parents:
“After all, illegal entry is illegal and must be handled appropriately in line with the law, although the balance between the issues of illegal entry and the welfare of the child should be considered,” Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone told a separate news conference.
In response to a reporter’s reference to concerns that at 13 years of age the girl will be too young to be left alone in Japan, Nakasone said, “Of course it would be best for them to live together as a family…and I understand the public’s sentiment wishing to realize their wish, but at the same time, the law is the law.”
Noriko’s parents have until March 9th to decide if they will leave their daughter behind in Japan or take her back to the Philippines.
