Lawson to buy am/pm

February 26th, 2009 by James

Lawson, Japan’s second-biggest convenience store chain, has announced that it will acquire am/pm for a price of 15 billion yen:

According to the Tokyo area stats in the NTV news clip embedded above, adding am/pm’s 573 stores to 1,222 Lawson stores would create a chain of 1,795 stores – outnumbering 7-11’s 1,602 total Tokyo area stores.

I always laugh when I see them use posters and cards instead of electronics.

I know this is an evil corporate takeover but yey because you can buy gig tickets at lawson and not am pm. Am pm is nearest my house but I have to trek all the way across the road for gig tickets. It is soooo inconvenient. Sigh.

That is assuming that several of the am/pm stores are not instead sold off because of poor location/performance. But, what am I to judge based on the principle of acquisition in the US? Convenience stores are like Starbucks in the US, you can find several within a very small area, and in some places right across the street from each other.
