Chinese apple juice sold as Aomori apple juice

Yet another scandal involving a Japanese company that labeled imported food as domestic:

Two former presidents of an apple processing firm were arrested Tuesday for allegedly labeling apple juice concentrate made mainly from Chinese apples as coming from Aomori.

Takao Sasaki, 61, and Junichi Osanai, 71, are suspected of defrauding a Tokyo food company out of some ¥50 million from February 2006 to January 2007 by selling its product made with imported juice concentrate under false pretenses.

This story is 3-4 months old already. I remember seeing the company president being interviewed on TV; he said, “We had no choice.”

Am not living in Japan at the moment so not sure if this is old news or not. Anyhow. It is not the first time we see scandals like this. It is outrageous to think that you no longer can trust what you eat and drink! Am wondering how much food with mis labels which do not get caught? This is THE industry which needs to be clean as we all need to drink and eat.
