I’m not surprised. Chimps are actually the little punks of the (non-human) primate world in a way. Chimps have been documented doing some very nasty things to each other in the wild. They’re also very strong bastards. Gorillas, for all their fearsome reputation, are far gentler. Think Ving Rhames chilling out. Bonobos are another fun lot – the hippies of the primates.

Recently a chimp tore off someone’s face, and was then stabbed several times to no avail. The chimp proceeded to enter a police cruiser and attack the officer inside who then shot the chimp several times at point blank range. This didn’t slow the chimp down, because it still had time to flee the scene before dying of blood loss.

In another, older incident, two chimps tore of someone’s nose, lips and right eye, as well as all of his fingers and part of his right foot and right hand.

Chimps kind of suck.

I think you’ll find that people who are truly concerned with animal welfare are preoccupied by the billions of animals raised and slaughtered in diabolical conditions in order to satiate the developed world’s lust for meat. A single chimp being treated to chocolate on TV hardly compares.
