It’s from Eijiro.

Eijiro is an English to Japanese dictionary created by Japanese translators for the purpose of rendering English text in Japanese. They provide reverse entries via ‘waeijiro’, which are basically useless. Using eijiro as anything other than a ei-ja dictionary is wasting your time. Use one of the other free online services like goo instead.

Has ALC always been this terrible? This is the first time I’ve noticed this kind of crap from them.

Space ALC and Eijiro are two totally different entities. Look at the wikipedia entry for Eijiro.

Buttfucker, are they serious. I don’t say even my long time friends buttfuckers, who the hell uses that?

I find ALC’s eijiro very useful, but admittedly have never come across such gems as “as black as a cunt” – they are very good for business vocab, masses of synonyms, and government stuff. The examples in text are also very useful. But you really need to know how to select the best word….

They also show the readings, which can be a great help with some of the more obscure kanji.

I shiver to think what some of my more clueless students could do with that. A lot of students of English are so keen on learning idiomatic English, they don’t really consider the source. I used to think that Taishukan’s ‘Genius’ English-Japanese dictionary was pretty bad for including arcane definitions, but I can’t recall seeing anything in Genius to rival those examples.

As a translator I’ve spotted a bunch of dodgy stuff on Space ALC. I agree with James that alphabetizing it is a major problem. But so, perhaps, is just having some of the racist epithets in there at all. Thanks for propagating it ALC.

I remember a couple of years ago i used alc to explain “pity” to my students and the first example was “pity f*ck”"

Respect for having “haole”. But the standby “hick”, “trailer trash”, and “red neck” are missing. Just an observation–no offense.

Just in case anyone from ALC is reading this, you can surely do better for ‘white people’. Just for starters, ’smiling face’ and ‘face’. And for pity’s sake, add to that Japanese section, which is sorely incomplete. It’s not nice, no, but turn about is fair play here.

‘Peckerwood’ is a little dated, but ‘the man’ isn’t — be sure to include both, since you’re going for current and arcane. And ‘cracker’ too — don’t forget ‘cracker’!
