Unexploded American bomb disrupts flights at Miyazaki airport

Miyazaki Airport had to delay or cancel some flights today to allow a GSDF team to remove a World War II era American bomb that had been discovered nearby:

The airport imposed flight restrictions because the west end of the airport was within a radius of 400 meters of the disposal site, an area designated for evacuation.

Around 1,700 people were evacuated from the area while GSDF personnel removed the detonator from the 250-kilogram dud found at a construction site in Miyazaki City.

It is the American bomb, the U.S. military should remove it. Why is the Japanese removing it?

It’s Japan’s fault that the bombs are there to begin with, but it’s not like it makes any difference today. I doubt it would even make sense to drag a US ordnance disposal team there when the JSDF can just do it themselves.

If the JSDF can do it themselves, all the better.
When you start talking of dragging the US military into this, then it gets ugly with finger pointing and one-sided accusations, like one side playing the victim and the other side waving around their victor’s justice.
It’s YOUR bomb. No the war was YOUR fault, and so on.

Pointed fingers don’t make bombs magically go away.

On that paranoid scale, you’d clear out a entire basketball court to dispose of a firecracker.

A bomb produces shrapnel, and there’s no reason not to play it safe when disposing of one.

I’d seen it before, but I found the page again featuring the WW2 Japanese guidelines on how much damage a 250 kilo bomb causes.

- If a 250 kg bomb detonates on open ground, you may receive fatal injuries from shrapnel even 200 meter away if you are standing on open ground. 45 meters, you will almost certainly die, and you are dead without a doubt within 35 meters.
- It will flatten the neighboring 5 or 6 houses if it falls on a house of typical wooden construction. Within 10 meters, all property is destroyed and death is certain.
- Bomb shelters within 6 meters will be destroyed killing all inside. Outside 12 meters is safe.
- Buried waterlines will be rendered unusable within 6 meters.

For 250 kg bombs versus steel and concrete buildings:

- It will go through 8 floors and destroy/kill everything in a 20 meter spherical radius.
- Dropped 6 meters from the walls, certain death for residents.
- 12 meters, without blast shutters on windows, high probability of death.

Also a note on how deep bombs embed themselves in the ground when dropped from planes.

- 250 kg bombs go 10 meters, deep, and 1 ton bombs may go as deep as 15 meters.

For a 250 kg bomb, the guidelines on life-or-death distances are 200 meters, so 400 meters isn’t that absurd when you want to mitigate any lesser injuries as well.

US bomb disposal teams worked in Japan from the end of the war up to the mid 1970′s. They trained Japanese bomb disposal teams alongside them while they worked. I’m sure the JASDF is very capable of making UXB’s safe without further American help.

Similar in the UK – unexploded German bombs are occasionally uncovered on construction sites in and around major cities – we don’t ask the Germans to come and remove them!

Which is very nice of you. On the other hand, there are also unexploded bombs found every now and then in Germany. I think last year, German authorities removed such bombs at two or three sites. Let’s see, how many we can find this year.

War is a terrible thing and what’s worse is that also in peace times, these things from the past will endanger , injure and kill people who had nothing to do with what happened back then and just want to live their lifes.

The Japaneses were very bad people who started the war and did the worst of all human evils. But, the bomb is an American bomb, it is most responsible of the Americans to go take care of it. Then, they should next help the children of Agent Orange in South East Asia, which is still happening.
