Burmese refugees in Japan face unemployment
Real Time News recently did a report on how the recent economic troubles are hurting the Burmese community in Japan:
The report focuses on two Burmese refugees in Gunma Prefecture. A community of about 160 Burmese lives in the city of Tatebayashi and about half of them have lost their jobs because local factories have had to cut back on staff.
One man had been forced to leave Burma 13 years ago because of his participation in a pro-democracy movement. Although he wishes he could go back to Burma, it is not an option for as long as the country remains under the control of a brutal military regime. He has been attempting to find new work through the local unemployment office, but he has had little luck so far (not being able to write a resume or speak complex Japanese hurts his chances).
The second Burmese man interviewed lost his job in November and now has only 3,000 yen in savings. He shows some photos of his wife and child. They are living in Malayasia and they depended heavily on the money he was earning in Japan He has no idea how they are surviving now that he is unable to send them any money.
