Japanese sumo wrestler arrested for marijuana possession

“Japanese sumo wrestlers too!” declares the Sponichi headline. Today at around 2:00PM, juryou rank sumo wrestler Wakakirin and a musician friend were busted with marijuana during a police search of a business in Roppongi.

If the charges prove to be true, I expect the Japan Sumo Association to ban him for life as they did with the Russian wrestlers caught with marijuana last year.

Update: Wakakirin has admitted that the marijuana was for his personal use.

If he’s guilty, then yeah, he should receive the same penalty as the Russian guy. Personally, regardless of one’s views on pot, and given the legal situation here, I don’t know why anyone who wants to live and work here would even take the risk. Another shochu, please…

They need to select sumos that can keep on the weight without herbal supplements.

So, is the Sumo Assoc. busy resetting their moral compass?

If the guy doesn’t lie like the gaijin did, and confesses like a good Japanese should, will they use that as evidence of his sincerity and forgive him?

And doesn’t the fact that some Japanese werestlers actually WERE doing pot mean that the Russians weren’t lying on that point?

Remember the limited drug testing that somehow only showed it was the gaijin who were using drugs and no Japanese?
And how we were kinda suspicious on that point?

Let the carnival of double standards and lies continue.
Just can’t wait for them to somehow blame it on gaijin this time, too.

If he is forgiven on account of not lying, the Association will have shown itself entirely too partial towards Japanese wrestlers and will lose a little face. Nothing will change.

I think the sumo community should be more worried about steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs rather than marijuana which isn’t going to help anyone win anything except a food-eating competition.
