Obama Inauguration UFO
The bad journalism award for this week goes to TBS for running an extended segment on yesterday’s Evening News about a UFO sighting at Barack Obama’s Inauguration:
Their report relied on a very low quality YouTube video of the event and they took internet rumors at face value. They even consulted a Japanese UFO experts who seemed to agree with the theory that it was an alien space ship and not a bird.
The truth about the object was shown a little later when TV Asahi’s Super News aired its own segment about the UFO:
Unlike TBS, they obtained a high quality video of the event from CNN. The video quite clearly shows that the object was a bird.

I don’t recall writing anything on this blog claiming that it is a work of journalism, so I don’t see why you think it should be compared to the same standard as a TV network that employs professional journalists to create news programs.
From the reader’s point of view, I think this site is a great way to quickly access interesting, foreigner-oriented, or just plain weird news about Japan. Often exposing the bias [frequently against gaijin and pro-government] and just plain stupidity/laziness [as in this case] of the Japanese media.
Although reading the comments is fun, too, as lots of people seem to misread things and start futile arguments based on their misreading. Silly.
Always wonder if it’s Japanese people with good English but no sense for what sarcasm is.

Perhaps our extraterrestrial friends are going green. Maybe they created a winged, extremely small, fuel efficient, pedal powered UFO.
So what kind of TV station is TBS? Do they usually air things like that?
