Tokyo University research student arrested for drug smuggling

A Spanish student conducting graduate-level research at Japan’s top university has been arrested fro smuggling drugs into the country:

Cabrera Gonzalez de Candamo Alfonso, a Spanish national, allegedly smuggled about 6 grams of dried cannabis resins in an airmail parcel from Spain, the police said.

The suspect sent the parcel from a post office in Spain to his home in Tokyo’s Meguro Ward on Jan. 2 and the parcel arrived at Kansai International Airport near Osaka on Jan. 6, where customs officials found the drug in a CD case in the parcel the following day, they said.

Investigators from the Tokyo police arrested Cabrera on Tuesday upon his arrival at Narita International Airport outside Tokyo, they said.

Cabrera has told the police that the drug was intended for his own use, and that he had smuggled marijuana earlier in April and July last year.

I’ve tried it. Well.. technically *I* didn’t do it. My friend sent it to my home in Tokyo. I was angry that he did that. He said don’t worry it’s in a fake name–just deny it if you get caught.

Never arrived. It was probably confiscated before it arrived in Japan; hopefully–or else I’m flagged.

Drug smuggling is probably a more severe crime than being caught with drugs in Japan. If the Spanish government is a little smart they will demand Japan to deport this man and have him serve the sentence in Spain where having 6 grams of marihuana is not a crime as Spain has decriminalised the use of cannabis.

Doesn’t matter whether its a crime in Spain or not. If he is deported to Spain to serve his sentence there the sentence won’t change. It’ll be the sentence handed down by the Japanese court that he’ll be serving. Spanish law is irrelevant.

The police got him in Spain (2006) for “drug consuption in a public area” in Gran Via, Madrid downtown. The The penalty was to pay a fine or go to a detox center. Small deal in Spain, but a huge one in Japan. I’m sure the university told foreign students about how strict is the law in Japan…

I am rather annoyed by some of you peoples view point on this subject. Japan tries to stay drug free, so it doesn’t end up with a lot of junkies. Even a little can still be a tip of an iceberg.

I am sure he knew what the consequences were before he thought about bringing the cannabis with him. I am wondering what he is thinking now about the whole thing, maybe that this was stupid idea.
