Shimura Zoo‘s Pan-kun is made to try walking on 4-meter stilts for the first time:

this is so sad and bizarre. it doesn’t matter how cute Pan-kun looks while getting into these ‘adventures’, after you take out the sound effects and cute clothes, all these TV shows air is a wild chimpanzee being practically tortured.

1. Pan-kun is a long, long way from “wild”. He was born in, and has been raised in, captivity. Human society. He wouldn’t last a day in the forest.

2. Walking on stilts and feeding goats is hardly “torture”. Ever watched documentaries of wild chimps in Africa? They are far, far rougher with each other than this show’s producers and Pan’s handler are with him. Any wild chimp that saw this show would be lining up for the job – if they could, that is.

Stiltwalking ok, but putting him on 4 meters high flexible poles… That’s not stilt walking. Chimps can probably take more than humans, but still 4 meters is quite a long way to fall down from.

I’ve been watching this show for a while now. At first I thought it was rather cruel, I mean they do ask a lot of him… but I noticed that they give Pan-kun affection and enough food, he is hardly a maltreated circus monkey.

Lots of people have gotten attached to Pan-kun and there would be an uproar if he was ever mistreated.

The question remains what will happen once Pan-kun grows up. Chimpanzees tend to turn vicious as they get older.
Either he will retire or they’ll swap him with a younger chimp and call him Pan-kun too.

Wow that’s totally messed up. I don’t mind having animals do strange things for my amusement, but the monkey feel from high up and it didn’t look like a soft landing. And the man in the video laughed at it. Messed up.

Yes, because all the trees in a CHIMPS native environment that are over 4 meters (or about the height of two humans) have guard rails and safety netting….
