Alex, you are just confirming my words.

“In the Meiji Era, the Japanese government adopted parts of a Western world view and tried to separate Japan from its “backward Asian neighbors”. That doesn’t mean Japanese thought they were Caucasian.”
Than what they though they were? Africans? They believed they were superior to the rest of inferior Asians, but Caucasians were the superiors at that time, so ...

“Oh, and Dr. Yu - Go through the following list of Korean Manhwa and tell me if you can find any that don’t portray characters with huge eyes, tiny mouths, and multi-colored hair”
You are right. Before and mostly after the Japanese colonization, Korea was greatly influenced by Japan in the cultural field. (Look at Korean Music and comics at that time). But Korean comics author copied Japanese mangas because they though they were cute, not because of supremacy ideology.

Regarding the anti-japanese thing, I’m tired of repeating this thing, but every time I post a comment that does not please the Japanese and the japanesphiles, they label me anti-japanese, and I’m tired of it.

Look, the “race purity” problem exist everywhere, even in Korea (although in a different way), and that was one of the reason why until recently Korea did not approve korean citizenship for foreigners. The Korean-chinese for instance were not given Korean citizenship despite of their long immigration history. They were also forbidden to own property in Korea.

My understanding of the issue is that illegals in the US "steal" jobs because their employers drive down wages so much that legals can't afford to do the same work. People in favor of illegal immigration always argue that Americans would never do [insert shitty job here], but that's obviously not true. There are any number of shitty jobs being done by Americans for low wage.

There are all kinds of other problems caused by illegal immigrants too.

Didn't you read my post? This whole thing is about her, not her parents. To put it bluntly, nobody cares about her parents. They're illegals and they got caught. The problem is that their daughter has been raised in Japan, knows no culture other than Japan, and is already in her teens. She didn't choose to illegally enter Japan and she didn't know she isn't legally supposed to be there.

When you say "shit like this," what are you referring to? It's funny that you should say illegal immigrants are lazy when they're the ones cleaning your McMansions.

Less judging, more reading.

The criteria for deportation is different,by my standard, though I don't care if one of the younger brother would go abroad and stay there.
But notice when the eldest brother expressed an sincere and polite apology, the reaction to the family from people have drastically changed.

Interestingly, it was argued in the early Meiji period that the Japanese might be a bit Caucasian, due to the Ainu blood. Check the New York Times archives for

"I can’t help but wonder if some of the anti-illegal comments on these sorts of posts are really aimed at Mexicans in the US…."

I know what you mean.

The bitching and moaning cracks me up. I'm from San Diego (I can actually see Mexico from my house as I live on top of a hill), and I can tell you this - All of the people who bitch about "illegals stealing our jobs and ruining our society", those would be the first people who would start crying out, "BUT WHO'S GOING TO CLEAN MY HOUSE?!" if they finally persuaded officials to forcefully boot them out.

I've heard it in Japan recently, too, and from people disappointingly close to me: "We should kick all of the immigrants out of this country so there are more jobs for us Japanese." Right, that's the ticket, cut the population down even more, create less spending, and reduce tax payers. The reason they were doing those jobs in the first place was because most Japanese felt the work was beneath them. But I'm off on a tangent here.

According to the Japanese myth, Japanese are descended from Amaterasu and other minor Shinto gods. In reality, they have Mongolian Spots on their backs when they're born and understand the idea of historical migration through Asia.

According to the Korean myth, Koreans are descended from the demigod Tan-Gun. In reality, they have Mongolian Spots on their backs when they're born (even my daughter, and she's only half Korean) and understand the idea of historical migration through Asia.

In the Meiji Era, the Japanese government adopted parts of a Western world view and tried to separate Japan from its "backward Asian neighbors". That doesn't mean Japanese thought they were Caucasian.

Oh, and Dr. Yu - Go through the following list of Korean Manhwa and tell me if you can find any that don't portray characters with huge eyes, tiny mouths, and multi-colored hair: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_manhwa_by_English_title

I don't think you are being "anti-Japan", but you are definitely misrepresenting it.

Nonsense. Any country? Why the hell should that open the door to 'any country' any more than, say, the way the US allows birth to be the sole determining factor - even if your parents were illegal.

And where do you think the Japanese people think they came from? I have never ever heard any Japanese person say anything other than mainland Asia.

You might want to show some really good sources for your claim that Japanese saw themselves as Westerners in the Meiji era and that is why their cartoons have big eyes. Especially since Japanese cartoons are also noted for that other Western feature, tiny little noses. Oh, wait....

While her parents could go back to the Philippines with relative ease, she can't. She didn't even choose to come to Japan, and apparently had no idea that she isn't supposed to be there. This whole case is about her, not her parents.

There is no way she should be allowed to stay. That would open the door to illegal immigrants in any country to have kids, put them through the school system, and then claim that it's the only country they've known and they should stay. People (parents) need to learn that there are consequences to doing things illegally. Besides, she's 11, smart, and completely adaptable. It's not the first time a young child has had to be relocated.

Regarding “race purity” I was referring to Japanese complex with their origin, since they seem not to be comfortable with the fact that they were originated from other asian nationalities like chinese, korean, and people from south Asia and Pacific islands.
I know that during the “Meiji Era” they even tried to see them as no Asians, but rather as westerners, and that’s the reason why Japanese cartoons show the Japanese with westerners features like big eyes.
Also I heard that that’s the reason why they despise the ainus, since they are the original inhabitants of the Japanese archipelagos.
Please don’t misunderstand me, this is not an anti-Japan answer. If I´m wrong please feel free to correct me.

If the parents go in front of the camera, they're just "illegals pleading their case." If the daughter goes in front of the camera, she's "an innocent victim asking for benevolent mercy."

It's marketing.

Right, though I guess Dr. was talking about a race in a classical sense.

Talking about minzoku, you might have already read this article by Chris Burgess. It was an interesting article.

The idea was that they would assimilate more easily, being “Japanese,” but this has not happened.

True.
I think it is legitimate to be concerned about who will be more likely to assimilate. Having similar cultural background is crucial. Perhaps the idea was that it was assumed that Japanese descendants inherited Japanese cultural background, and they would assimilate easily but it was mistaken. The fact is that some assimilated easily but others didn't.

But I don't understand the idea of "race" in the first place. It is very ambiguous notion and I think the idea of Japanese race is just a myth as the idea of American race.

And I am not sure Japanese “feel a closer bond” to Japanese -descendants living over seas. Japanese don't know and are not concerned about, for instance, Japanese American sport players in the U.S. A player gains attention when s/he might play in a Japanese team.
I for one feel closer bond to people living overseas who appreciate and love Japan, Japanese descendants or not.
Jero is being welcomed more because he loves Japan and he speaks Japanese and he exemplifies Japanese (forgotten) traditional value than because he was a descendant of Japanese, imo.

"there is a Japanese “race” and that Japanese immigration policy is carried out based on it."

If this is not an issue, then why allow nikkei from Sth America in so easily? The idea was that they would assimilate more easily, being "Japanese," but this has not happened.

"the japanese complex of race purity"

I wouldn't call it a "complex", but a "world view".

Korea and Japan have a similar modern ethnic-nationalist social view. For Japan it's Yamato, and for Korea it's Han-Min decended from Tan-Gun. The majority of Koreans "feel a closer bond" to Korean-descendants living over seas who have never been in Korea than to foreigners who have lived in Korea for a very long time. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a similar result among Japanese.

What is wrong is your assumption that there is a Japanese "race" and that Japanese immigration policy is carried out based on it.
Don't project your Korean assumption into Japan.
And keep in mind, Dr.Yu, that your comments are just seen as instances of diasporic Korean nationalism defined by anti-Japanese sentiments and strong ethnic Korean consciousness.

Big problem. Japan is not USA, so laws are different.
Demanding japan to do whatever USA does on immigration just because it seems good is unfair. On the other hand keeping illegal all those immigrants whithout minimum assistance is not good either.
I think the main hindrance for this problem is the japanese complex of race purity, but that's an illution, since nobody is pure and we all came from someone else.

If you really come from a family related to lawyers you should know that the law is a wonderfully flexible tool, that many laws are written deliberately to allow for flexibiility, and to determine that is what judges are for. No two cases are ever completely identical.

Revising immigration law won't solve this kind of problem as long as there are illegal immigrants. Canada and the U.S. for instance, have the same kind of problem as I showed on other related threads.

there might be some faults with the japanese law since it really doesn't provide much opportunities to immigrants but coming from a family related to lawyers , a law is indeed a law and if they would approve one to stay in japan, it would be unfair to the others who were deported with the same case.

I say deport her and make revisions to the japanese constitution, but knowing japan i don;t think there would be any hehehe

What do lazy illegals in the US have to do with this girl in Japan? She was born in Japan and is Japanese in every way except ethnicity. And why exactly are you expecting a minor to pay taxes?

Sounds to me like you oppose all immigration, which is odd since you claim to be an immigrant yourself. Double standards?

Why am I not allowed to say "Let Noriko stay but kick out Debito" ? At least Noriko would be grateful. Debito was granted Japanese citizenship but is still ungrateful.

Actually, the US does kinda-sorta have free health care. Any public hospital that receives government funds is required by law to provide care regardless of the patient's ability to pay. I used this myself for some minor treatment during a period of unemployment years ago. I had to fill out some extra paperwork, but I didn't pay a cent. Public hospitals don't advertise this option much, but the law is the law and they are obligated to follow it.

I feel sorry for the girl, her life is in Japan, her school, her studies, her friends. From what I remember in the earilier story, she only speaks japanese and doesn't speak her parents native language. So it's difficult that she have to leave everything she ever know and move back to her parent's native country, cuz for her, Japan is her home. I feel so sorry for her and I hope she can stay in Japan. but then it wouldn't be fair to the other immigrants that got deported as well, is it? This is such a complicated case, I hope something can be done...

She is polite and humble, knows how to express the sentiment of thankfulness.
She is more than qualified to stay in Japan, in my standard.

Illegal immigrants in the US can't suck up health care because US health care sucks(ranked 37) and doesn't have a universal health care. they are most likely paying out of their pocket.

Illegal immigrants pay taxes too.

Did you even watch the video? If you did, you should have noticed that the girl was speaking Japanese and has Japanese friends.

My parents came to the US illegally. Now they are citizens, they speak English, and they pay taxes. wow.

I feel sorry for her. Not because our parents are from the same country but she's a young girl at an age where she's very vulnerable. Especially in knowing about her cultural identity, she grew up in Japan and is now very Japanese. She's only caught up in it because of her parent's fault.

How would you like it if you made to leave the only place you know of and grew up in?

The best possible way is to only deport her parents while they apply for a Visa since they've been in the country for so long, they would pass the requirements without too much trouble. Let her stay in the country and give her citizenship.

I grew up in a country in the middle east where the culture was very different from what my parents were raised in. My parents raised me in a way that I could still retain the culture they grew up in and if I didnt have that, I wouldnt be the same person. Now Im LEGALLY in America, and very proud of my heritage and still a person who accepts all cultures.
