I do notice that the billboard carries the name of an organisation called “The National Unification Advisory Council Dallas Chapter”. Could they possibly be related to The Unification Church – ie The Moonies?

For anyone else who calls them “just rocks” – They expand the EEZ of the country that possesses them. You can think of it like this: Why doesn’t the U.S. just give up Alaska to Russia? It’s just a blank white landscape.

And it should be noted that if the islands belong to Japan, South Korea’s EEZ shrinks only slightly, moving just a few miles closer to the peninsula. However, if you believe Korea’s claim and give the islands to them their EEZ grows rather dramatically as they claim a big chunk of the Sea of Japan to the north, south and east of the islands. To use your Alaska analogy, it would be as if under US jurisdiction the US EEZ remains about where it is now, but if Alaska was Russian the new EEZ line was drawn to include Puget Sound for the Russians.

As far as I understand the fight isnt really over the lump of rock island itself but the ocean around it including fishing and oil drilling rights.

I’ll bite.

So tell me, what “history” have a bunch of Koreans learned that James is missing?

Or perhaps you meant to imply that James is incapable of understanding the importance of such a billboard because he isn’t Korean (since Koreans are apparently neither culturally ignorant nor blinded by “some-other-kind-of-ism”)?

Many of us may very well be labeled as Japanophiles, but that doesn’t change the fact that this billboard is stupid.

Thank you, Alex, for pointing out the true origin of the organisation. And thank you to LB for a very neat summary of the situation.

But no thank you to Rocky for trying to stir up and arguement that simply won’t fly. Koreans probably do know more about Korean history than Americans – I’d be disappointed if they didn’t. They probably know more about Japanese history too, in much the same way I’d hope that Americans would know more about Canadian history.

But the billboard is in English too, so who are they trying to target? Americans who’ve never heard of these islands? Or Korean who, whilst terribly knowledgable about history can’t read their own language? Hmm.

I seem to recall that the country that has done the most to prevent Korean unification is America… about fifty years ago.

Pardon me for being blinded by “Japanism”, but then I am reading a website about Japan, so presumably I must be interested in the country.

Does anyone else find it ironic that an organisation that campaigns for the reunification of two countries appears to be determined to isolate it from another?

Some Korean business owner prolly put up the sign. I bet Japanese people go to his store/restaurant and he gets all pissed and gives them a flyer of the billboard image. And then kicks them out.
