Record sales for McDonald’s Japan

December 20th, 2008 by James

It’s been a very good year for McDonald’s Japan:

McDonald’s Holdings Co. (Japan) said Thursday that sales at its network of shops are likely to top ¥500 billion in the 2008 business year, making it the first restaurant chain in Japan to surpass half a trillion yen in annual sales.

Will the Japanese film makers make a movie called Super Size Me! I was just reading a health article how the Japanese on the coast had very low cardiovascular disease due to the seaweed and seafood diet. Fast food will destroy that statistic and their health will be the same as westerners!

Well on the bright side we will start seeing more busty Japanese women thanks to a Western diet. On the down side, Japanese will start becoming lazy fat bastards like most people in my country.

I hate McDonald’s and avoid it like the plague. But with the change in the economy people will consider it to be an economic life saver.

The sad thing is they don’t realize how it is even possible for the food to be so cheap. Massive overproduction is the key. Whenever you hear “we have to feed the world” lines it is coming from the food industry to stimulate overproduction, driving down the costs of the basic ingredients fast food uses.

Fast food is actually bad for the economy, something people don’t realize. I’m not surprised though because people either don’t care or don’t realize that it’s also bad for their bodies.

I think it is the lemming theory – everyone else is eating it, it smells good, they seem to be enjoying it; therefore I’ll do the same.
Like I did tonight. God forbid I am becoming a lemming.

Is it a sign of the times where people are overworked and do not have time or are too tired to cook a healthy meal?

Overworked? I don’t think so. We have more gadgets and doodads to save time than any other generation in history. It’s laziness!

It takes years of effort to change your body. Fat people work harder at being fat than body builders work at being healthy. They devote every day to laziness, poor eating choices and excuse making.

Somehow I think its more likely that time-pressed budget-conscious Japanese will grab a Quarter Pounder or KFC with fries and a Coke than to chow down on pork pies with mushy peas, spotted dick and custard, or steak and kidney pudding.

Good luck with that though.

You mean people in the U.K. don’t eat KFC or McD’s? Cause Ali G had me thinking otherwise. It’s silly to associate international companies with any single nation. They operate outside of national boundaries and have no particular allegiance besides free markets.

“Attention Japanese People: Please stop adopting bad [insert country name here] health practices.”

Regarding health issues in general – Are you insinuating that health only involves food? Japan and the U.K. have nearly the same smoking rates, which are higher than the U.S. You can die of a heart attack or from lung cancer, take your pick.

The life expectancy at birth of both the U.K. and the U.S. are the same. Japan’s is still higher (by 4 years).

When my friend and I went Japan when noticed that McDonald’s food tasted a tad bit more ‘healthier’ than their American counterpart. Not to say that maybe it is, it just tasted that way because we didn’t feel sick or had stomach aches after we finished our meal like we would’ve have if we ate an American McDonald’s burger (and that’s why we stopped eating at our local McDonald’s). Maybe because the portion was smaller? A medium-sized drink in America is considered a large in Japan, and a small a kid’s size! So tiny!

There’s nothing wrong with a hamburger as an occasional meal. Japanese people eat very healthily most of the time. The Japanese diet is low in meat, fat and dairy products, and high in fish, fruit and vegetables.
