Hilton offers 80 dollar parties in Japan

With the dollar hitting all-time lows vs. the yen, stores across Japan are trying to make consumers forget about the recession by marking down prices on imported products and holding rising yen sales. The Hilton hotel in Osaka has taken a slightly different approach by organizing a “$80 Party” plan.

The price of the party is adjusted every day based on the exchange rate, a system that would reward people who reserve parties expecting the value of the dollar to stay low.

It is an interesting idea, and well timed with the bonenkai/shinenkai season.

I wonder if the rights to an $80 dinner in the future can be sold to another party. Perhaps we could put together bundles of $80 dinners and use them as collateral to get other dining-related assets, such as more expensive food or better furniture for the dining room. Then divide up the bundles and sell them to pension funds, to spread the risk. At least they’ll have crumbs left to eat!
