Death row inmate killed by cancer

December 17th, 2008 by James

A 69-year-old death row inmate died at a medical facility in Tokyo yesterday after losing a battle with cancer:

Kazuo Sawachi, a former senior officer of the Metropolitan Police Department, was sentenced to hang for the slaying of two people for money and jewelry in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1984.

His death sentence was finalized in 1993 after he withdrew an appeal to the Supreme Court.

Japanese death row inmates often wait years or even decades before their sentence is carried out, so cases like this one are not exactly unheard of.

This is why we need a massive government-funded program to find a cure for cancer… so we can finish the job ourselves.
