The LDP and the KKK

The Yomiuri has reported that former finance minister Ibuki Bunmei made the following comment about three letters that happen to be found within the acronym YKKK (an informal political alliance of politicians with the names Yamazaki, Kamei, Kato, and Kan):

「ＫＫＫに多数の黒人が暗殺されたように、自民党の有為な若い人が政界再編の美名の下で暗殺されないよう願う」

“Many black people were killed by the KKK (the Ku Klux Klan). I hope that many promising young LDP members are not similarly killed by the political realignment carried out under this beautiful moniker.”

I think you’ll find that’s “…will not use political realignment as a pretext for doing something similar to etc etc.”

Politicians still seem unaware of the fact that even if they assume they’re just mouthing off to a captive audience, anything sufficiently interesting or controversial is going to get reported by the media both domestic and foreign. It has brought down so many political careers here that you’d think by now people would have become more careful. It often strikes me how guileless Japanese politicians are on the one hand despite being cagey on the other.
