Too Erotic to be true??

December 5th, 2008 by anton

東方神起(Tōhōshinki) also known as TVXQ outside Japan is a group of five South Korean boy band that joins the rising trend of South Korean artists that built their fame in Japan in a bid to strengthen Korea-Japan relationship.

mirotic

In recent months TVXQ managed to sell more than 460 Thousands copies of their latest album Mirotic and topped the best selling chart in Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan according to JoongAn Daily.

Their story of success however received a kick in the teeth when ironically, out of all people in the world, the South Korean government have decided that one of their song entitled 呪文
(Read Jyu mon, or “Curse/Spell” in English translation) was “Sexually Instigating” and not fit for teenagers under the age of 19.

The South Korean Youth Protection Committee (青少年保護委員会) which is under South Korean Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (韓国保健福祉家族省) have highlighted that these wordings in the 呪文 (Mirotic) song:

「1回のキス…2回のキス…おまえをおれのモノにした」(in Japanese)

Which means:

“First Kiss… Second Kiss.. I am gonna make you mine.” (closest English translation)

And the song as a whole is too erotic and may lead to sexual thoughts and motivation.

The Committee has also ban sales of the CD to minors below 19 years old and asked all television and radio stations to refrain from airing the music video or song from 1PM~10PM during weekdays and from 10AM~10PM during weekends, according to Mainichi Daily News

SM entertainment’s (the boy band’s talent agency group) has made a public apology on its official site and vowed to release a “revised” version of the song, but has pleaded for reconsideration of the harsh punishments (labeling their CD’s “Not for sale to minors below 19 years old”) according to JoongAn Daily.

Mirotic can sampled through purchased through Amazon’s Japanese and American sites.

The warning actually makes sense. To quote one of my Dril Instructors:

“Do you like me, private? You do, huh? Well likin’ leads to lovin’. Lovin’ leads to huggin’. Huggin leads to kissin’. And kissin’ leads to…. THINGS, private! Is that what you want to do to me? THINGS?!?” lol

So clearly, the next step after “kiss” is “things”, therefore any song with not one, but TWO kisses is sexually charged and not for minors.

the airing ban will definitely work because we all know that teenagers under 19 don’t watch TV or listen to the radio after 10pm

Actually you can’t use the Japanese lyrics for this, as the Japanese version isn’t really dirty at all and the Korean-Japanese versions don’t translate into each other. The Korean lyrics, however, as they are different, can be construed as considerably dirty.

I don’t know where you were told that is one of the lines that was highlighted, but the Korean lines that I know were highlighted were:

사랑은 뭐다? 뭐다! 이미 수식어 Red ocean
What is love? What? Already red ocean

혈관을 타고 흐르는 수억 개의 나의 Crystal
Running through your veins, flowing through you are millions of my crystal

(Credit for these go to DBSKer)

And the argument against these lyrics is that they represent “hymen” and “sperm” respectively.

(Honestly, I thought Red Ocean was a reference to their fanclub, as their official colour is red and when DBSK perform there is an ocean of red balloons in the crowd. )

Also, this may have nothing to do with Japan, but it does relate to this article.

SM Entertainment has decided to file a claims suit in order to remove the under 19 ban. They also were quoted as saying:

“Although we agreed to release a cleaned up version of Mirotic, we don’t agree that it was inappropriate. We believe the Korean Ministry’s ruling was unfair, and decided to fight it in court. They’re misinterpriting the lyrics, finding sexual and erotic meaning where there is none.”

Sorry I don’t have the source for the original nor the translation.
