Russian sumo wrestler lied about match rigging

Former sumo wrestler Wakanoho (Aleksandrovich Gagloev) has admitted that the allegations he made about match rigging were untrue:

He says he made the whole thing up because a person claiming to be friend of a stablemaster told him that speaking out about match rigging would help his chances of being unbanned by the Japan Sumo Association. It didn’t.

Wakanoho now says he deeply regrets making false statements and wants to apologize directly to the sumo wrestlers he named when making the accusations.

While I don’t trust a think this fat turd says I strongly believe he was given “hush” money by the Sumo league. If this were to have continued it would be the end of the sport so they simply threw some money at him to send him packing and tell everyone he was lying in the process.

It would be great if he turned around and showed everyone his bank balance and told everyone that the Sumo league gave him the cash to STFU. That would be the ultimate…hah! I wish.

one is probably the one closest to the answer… it’s been known for a while now by most Japanese betting dealers that the Yakuza has a stake in many sporting events, including sumo. I don’t see why he would admit to lying even if he did lie…the normal thing to do would be feign ignorance about sumo proceedings and just apologize to the sumo wrestlers. The situation seems weird enough that I would say he was probably threatened to some degree to make that statement.
