Narita Airport’s 700 millionth traveler

Narita Airport officially declared yesterday that Tomiko Nonomura, a resident of Shizuoka Prefecture returning to Japan from a trip to Paris with her husband, was the airport’s 700 millionth traveler. Here’s a video clip that shows the airport honoring her with a small ceremony:

Meanwhile, the Japan Times reports that the world economic situation is causing a big decline in the number of foreign tourists visiting Japan.

How could’ve they have known that she was the 700 millionth traveler?

Computations based on number of flights coming and going, number of passengers on those flights, averages extrapolated out, it is very easy to calculate the day the “700,000,000th passenger” will transit. From there narrow it down by flights (again fairly easy if you have the data), find the plane that will carry “#700,000,000″, calculate of the passengers disembarking (in this case) which body coming through the gateway would equal “#700,000,000″ (as in the 23rd person out the door) and call them over when they arrive.

Anyway, it is a promotional event. Ms. Nonomura may not be exactly #700,000,000, but she was close enough. Luck of the draw.

Obviously the drop in visitors has nothing to do with the introduction of mandatory fingerprinting for all foreign nationals.

It certainly doesn’t look like the fingerprinting system has anything to do with it. For months after it was implemented, tourist numbers continued to rise.

The Japan Times article states that tourist numbers started dropping three months ago.

Are we talking tourist numbers, or number of visitors? Given that I would hazard that most visitors arrive in Japan on business (or at least a significant fraction), I would prefer a more detailed breakdown.

Nope. No more than it did for a drop in the numbers of tourists going to the US to get fingerprinted, probed, and forced to duckwalk shoeless through the checkpoints. It is actually easier for me as a foreigner (with re-entry permit, but still…) to enter and leave Japan than it is for me as a US citizen to enter and leave the US.

Did they only count japanese nationals? Kinda funny that a japanese house wife won.

Narita is one of the most customer oriented airports in the world.
They would equally have chosen a foreigner as the 700.000.000.000th visitor then they did this person.

Heck, they even chose me to participate in an airport improvement program for the past two years. And I can definitely be called Johnny foreigner.
