Japanese man living inside Mexico City airport terminal

Hiroshi Nohara has been living inside a terminal at the Mexico City airport for nearly three months, making him a minor celebrity in Mexico:

The Tokyo native flew into Mexico with a tourist visa and a return ticket home, but he never left the airport. In an interview Thursday alongside the airport McDonald’s, he said he had no motive for his extended stay and doesn’t know how much longer he’ll remain.

“I don’t understand why I’m here,” he said through a visiting interpreter originally hired by a television station. “I don’t have a reason.”

The embassy can’t force him to leave, and since Nohara’s visa is valid all Mexican officials can do it wait for it to expire in early March.

Related Trivia: Hiroshi Nohara is also the name of the father in the popular anime series Crayon Shin-chan.

Now, this is strange. Well I guess come March, he will have to go home and probably write his story. Unfortunately The Terminal has already been made to a movie. Never the less he will certainly have an interesting experience.

I think that was a good move on his part. I would stay in the airport as well because of all the recent crime that Mexico has been experiencing. Mexico right now is not a good place to be visiting. You can’t even protest about drug trafficking because the drug lords themselves will tell you to stop or get shot which they the have done many times in the middle of the day. Good story never the less.

It’s sad but it’s true. I live in Mexico City and the airport is one of the “safest” places on the city, at least you’re not gonna be assaulted with a gun or a knife.

My guess is that he owns money back home to the notorious Yakuza , or really just an ex – up tight salaryman who decided he had enough of the long hours and the continous abuse of the Japanese working class by the powerful corporations .

I’m from Mexico City and I read the story 2 weeks ago in a local newspaper, In an interview to the paper he said that he arrived on sept 2nd, He is 40 years old, he doesn’t have a wife or children, he lived with his mom but he hasn’t called her because he doesn’t want her to be worried. He didn’t have an established job in Tokyo, his hometown, he had some savings that he used to visit the United States and Argentina, he failed to go to Brazil because he lost his documents, in Mexico the Japanese Embassy help him to fix his migratory papers, that’s why he doesn’t have a problem staying here.

He mentioned that only once go out of the airport to visit the “Aztec Stadium” (Biggest Soccer stadium in Mexico), but he got lost and was very hard for him to find the way back since he doesn’t speak spanish and not much english, but he said the people was very kind and got directions to return to the airport. He told them that he feels comfortable here since the police officers, migratory workers and the airport personal are nice with him.
He said he had a ticket to comeback to japan but refused to show it.

Makes me think of the guys who sleep in the train stations in Tokyo; they don’t seem to mind staying there.
