Blatant fakery on Japanese TV

November 21st, 2008 by James

It’s quite possible that some of the TV clips that have been posted on Japan Probe before have been staged or faked.

However, I don’t think anything posted in the past comes close to the blatant fakery in this clip from a program[モクスペ 衝撃スクープ裏のウラ 全部ホンモノ最強版(8)] that aired on NTV last night:

The show was supposed to feature a demonstration from a Chinese martial artist who could perform the incredible feat of punching into a melon with a single finger. However, it was plainly obvious to anyone watching that the melon had been tampered with. If you can’t see it in the replay shown in the video clip, here’s a screen capture:

fakery

The replay shows the melon had clearly been cut open already, and it just so happened that the man made his finger strike right along a spot on the cut line that looks to have been softened-up in advance. The cut line was even visible earlier in the clip, and the host of the program does a very poor job of hiding the fact that he is trying to hold the pre-cut melon together when Ken Shimura makes a joke attempt at the martial arts feat. Having witnesses how utterly fake it was by viewing an analog broadcast of the program, I can only imagine how much faker it would have looked to viewers watching the digital broadcast on high definition television screens.

I think eeeehhh is used for unbelievable information
and waaaaahh is used for unbelievable acts.

Japan really needs a James Randi to counter all this fakery and psychic shit.

NTV strikes again. You were definitely right about NTV being garbage, James.

The host, Mino Monta, is possibly the World’s most annoying man.

やらせ is very common on Japanese shows. They are in business to sell advertising slots more than anything else – that’s their primary source of revenue…like anywhere else.

That said, this is pretty egregious. The cut was visible the whole time. At least try to cover up the fakery!

Overthinker got that one right ;-> Reminds me of those shows where a hypnotist manages to hynotize every one of the TV talents. But many of the talents have openly admitted on other shows, etc, that they just played along, tat they felt they had to.

At the 21 second mark, you can see an existing hole in the bottom when the guy lifts it up. This is full of poorly hidden shenanigans.

Imagine if he had hit the wrong spot. Will his finger break?
