How to beat Sazae-san at rock-paper-scissors

November 14th, 2008 by James

For the last 40 years, a cartoon called Sazae-san has been airing every Sunday night from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on Fuji TV. Since 1991, every episode has ended with Sazae-san challenging viewers to a rock-paper-scissors battle.

As part of their coverage marking 40 years of Sazae-san, Fuji TV news went through the archive of all 863 episodes aired since 1991 to determine Sazae-san’s rock-paper-scissors strategy.

The results were as follows:

  1. Scissors – 300 times
  2. Paper – 283 times
  3. Rock – 280 times

I like to throw paper and I was wondering why she kept winning. Seems I was playing to her strengths.
