Permanent residents to receive cash handouts from the government

Wondering about your share of the Japanese government’s huge economic stimulus package? It was previously unclear whether or not foreigners living in Japan would get any handouts as part of the package, but Mainichi is now reporting that foreigners holding permanent residency will receive cash from the government. It does not appear that tax paying foreigners on working visas or spouse visas will be included.

12,000 yen per household member for me = 36,000 yen. That’s 36,000 yen more than I have right now.

If you were just walking along the street and simply “came across ¥12000″, you would think it was a lot of money.

Thanks for the link James!
I was thinking a little more about this, and what I feel would be fair would be all PRs, plus all other foreign family members listed on the koseki or juminhyo, so foreign spouses get picked up too.
I’d also say “should”, rather than “will” get the cash, as who knows what the final decision will be!
(Oh, and I see Tepid Naruhodo and friends are reacting true to form)

Ken Y-N has cleared things up, but the Mainichi article doesn’t say that any foreigners will get cash, just that they should. Heck, the government hasn’t even figured out how to distribute the money yet.

Interestingly, 12,000 yen is how much my October installment of my city tax went up over 2007.
It’s not much money, and paying it certainly won’t (didn’t) break the bank, but it does piss me off.

Obviously there has to be some time limit, because giving cash to people frsh off the boat just ain’t fair, but I’ve been paying taxes here almost 10 years, why the hell do I get screwed while 99% of the population gets a handout?
And it’s economic stimulus anyway, don’t we gaijin spend money, too? WTF? Are we gonna burn it or something? Meanwhile, are the rich elites getting it, too? So they can what? Pad out their savings accounts by an unnoticeable blip? That’s the OPPOSITE of the reason they’re handling out this money!
Just give 12,000 to every person who paid taxes last year.
Yet another example of the Japanese government’s friendly welcoming attitutde towards gaijin scum.
Guess I gotta figure out a way to get my 12,000 yen one way or another.

Maybe they fear that if your were North Korean you’d send it all to Kim Jong Il – to pay for better photoshopping experts, probably.
The idea itself is incredibly silly, of course. Now, if they handed the money out in the form of vouchers, with a use-by date, it might work better.

Them give me something! I don’t believe it. I suppose there’s always a first time, but I still don’t believe it.

¥12000? So about $120 USD. You call that a stimulus package?
