Bush mentions battleship “Yamamato” in speech

November 12th, 2008 by James

bush speech

Sankei/MSN report that President George W. Bush mentioned the battleship “Yamamoto” in the Veterans Day speech he gave at the USS Intrepid museum yesterday, apparently referring to the famous battleship Yamato.

The official transcript on WhiteHouse.gov acknowledges that Bush made an error, but both the text and video of the speech clearly show that Bush actually said “Yamamato” instead of the Sankei article’s “Yamamoto”:

In that massive engagement, American forces faced some of the most formidable elements of the Japanese Navy. The Japanese fleet included the Yamamato* and the Musashi — these were the heaviest and the largest battleships ever constructed. The Imperial Navy approached the coast of the Philippines from three different directions, and it was a fearsome challenge — but the men of this ship were ready. The Intrepid’s Air Group fought courageously and without rest. By the time the battle ended three days later, the United States Navy had sunk the Musashi to the ocean floor, and lifted hopes for victory in the Pacific.

The asterisk at the bottom of the transcript let’s us know he meant to say Yamato.

Clearly getting confused between Admiral Yamamoto and the Yamato. As is James, I think:

“but both the text and video of the speech clearly show that Bush said “Yamamato” instead of “Yamamoto””

Don’t you mean “but both the text and video of the speech clearly show that Bush said “Yamamato” instead of “Yamato””?

Sorry for the confusion, but I meant what I wrote – I meant to draw a distinction between the incorrect “ヤマモト” that Sankei reported Bush said and the incorrect “Yamamato” that Bush actually said. I’ve changed the sentence a bit to clarify.

Okay, so there were two errors Bush’s and the Sankei’s. Cool.

And I’m so tired of lefties taking the media’s obsession with making every verbal gaffe into front page news as “proof” that this dude with an MBA from Harvard an idiot, just because he can’t speak as well as Martin Sheen does on West Wing with a script and 20 takes.

And it’s not even that he’s any worse than most other politicians or his critics themselves. Joe Biden had a gaffe a day all through the campaign, but he got a pass from the media. Meanwhile Obama makes vague promises that he can’t hope to keep, has already semi-reversed himself on half his promises and started pissing off his base and he hasn’t even been elected a week, but he speaks well, so he’s the Messiah.

As Obama encounters the real world full of evil regimes that hate the USA, faces the reality that those dictators only hoped he would win because they hoped he would be weak, and Obama decides to keep most of Bush’s foreign policy measures in place as the least-worst option, [including the CIA's interogation methods] expect criticism of Bush to drop off, as it would make Obama look bad.

Besides, “misunderestimate” is a perfectly cromulent word.

I’m also annoyed with those who think that everyone who criticizes Bush’s malapropisms, is a left-wing nutcase. I personally think Arnold Schwarzenegger would make a good president, and liked McCain until he turned to the Dark Side of the Force and then selected Palin as his VP. Considering that one of the most promiment media voices in the US is Fux News, which is hardly left wing, it is also surprising that the anti-Obama people deride media as being impossibly liberal. To say nothing of the huge voice people like Limbaugh enjoy.

Does anyone have any real data on who people like Kim Jong Il supported for president, or is this just another case of “foreigners like Obama, foreigners hate America (are jealous of America) so Obama is the wrong choice”? Was there dancing in the streets in Iran?

And Bush I would hope does do at least a few takes, and certainly has a script. That’s what the teleprompters are for. And his West Wing writers. I really doubt he would do his Veterans’ Day speech off the cuff.

Actually I think he just keeps his speaking skills loose to cater to the anti-intellectual types in the GOP, you know the types who vote for the candidate who’s more “down to earth” or “who they would most like to have a beer with”. He’s not dumb people misunderestimate him, I mean come on that anonymous smear campaign in the 2000 presidential campaign aimed at McCain didn’t just come out of nowhere. He knows how to whip up the masses with fear(war on terror) or vengeance(Iraq) granted they probably didn’t help.

“People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history.”

“The administration I’ll bring is a group of men and women who are focused on what’s best for America, honest men and women, decent men and women, women who will see service to our country as a great privilege and who will not stain the house.”

“I’m conservative, but I’m not a nut about it.”

“…this dude with an MBA from Harvard…”

If an MBA from Harvard protects you from criticism, what does a degree from Harvard Law School followed by position of president of the Harvard Law Review protect you from?

“…so he’s the Messiah.”

The only people with an obsession of President-elect Obama as “The Messiah” are deeply partisan right-wingers who use the claim as negative campaigning.

The media plays to the largest popular base, and Bush was unpopular and, therefore, an obvious target. So was Palin. They get a lot of flak because they have low ratings. It’s as simple as that.

I hope you’ll recall that the almost all news sources announced the re-election of President Bush in 2004 was a “mandate”. Was that the left-wing-news-nuts in action, too?

Bush has made many verbal gaffes amongst them not knowing the definition of sovereignty (its on youtube). When someone like Obama appears on the political scene, it certainly is a breath of fresh air to see our leader actually know how to make coherent speeches. Why try to defend the dumbest and most unpopular president in US history? 76% disapproval rating takes the cake really…ouch.

Btw, I’m not a left-wing nutcase, I’m just tired of wars wasting our money, our economy in shit, and the entire world hating the very existence of Americans thanks to GW. And don’t come at me with that “We’re helping in Afghanistan” BS. You know thats a bunch of horse poop.

Sorry but Bush is a total idiot. A complete and total idiot – and it doesn’t take a liberal, left-wing nut to see that. His MBA from Harvard is simply “proof” that he has rich parents with a lot of connections.

I especially like how Level3 warps the conversation like this:
Bush isn’t an idiot because look at all that stuff Obama is saying.

It’s depressing as hell that Bush was elected to the highest American office twice by promoting a campaign of fear and anti-intellectualism. He’s an insult to the style of government that Reagan created, and he’s an insult to the founding father’s of our nation.

You need only look at Thomas Jefferson (a Democratic Republican) to see how far we’ve fallen under the Bush Administration:

From wiki:

Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 – July 4, 1826)[1] was the third President of the United States (1801–1809), the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and one of the most influential Founding Fathers for his promotion of the ideals of republicanism in the United States. Major events during his presidency include the Louisiana Purchase (1803) and the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804–1806).

As a political philosopher, Jefferson was a man of the Enlightenment and knew many intellectual leaders in Britain and France. He idealized the independent yeoman farmer as exemplar of republican virtues, distrusted cities and financiers, and favored states’ rights and a strictly limited federal government. Jefferson supported the separation of church and state[2] and was the author of the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom (1779, 1786). He was the eponym of Jeffersonian democracy and the co-founder and leader of the Democratic-Republican Party, which dominated American politics for a quarter-century. Jefferson served as the wartime Governor of Virginia (1779–1781), first United States Secretary of State (1789–1793) and second Vice President (1797–1801).

Reflecting on the big picture of the day and this event dissected in such detail, I think it’s great that President Bush chose to speak at the Intrepid on Veteran’s Day. This historic ship is a fitting platform to honor American veterans from on such a day. From a naval historian’s view, to recall her role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, that great sea battle, to include specific reference to the Japanese super-battleships that also fought there is actually pretty cool too. Overall good to see this commemoration.

“Overall good to see this commemoration.”

Sorry to bring it up, but this Intrepid appearance is just empty showmanship. To really understand Bush (and the GOP) attitude towards veterans and servicemen, you have to look at their record of actions (not words and platitudes) on the other 364 days of the year that are not Veteran’s Day. Sorry to say. That record is a wholesale disgrace, which this one day scripted appearance cannot hide.

It’s when “now and then” become a little too regular that people start to have fun with it. And the egregiousness of some classic Bushisms is another major factor. Obama says “57 states.” Bush says “Is our children learning?” Which, objectively, is *funnier*?

I don’t really think so. After all, do we talk of Clintonisms? I can ony think of his “it depends what the definition of “is” is” offhand. Or even Reaganisms, despite the fact the Ron was increasingly less fit to be Prez. Bush 41 and his Thousand Points of Light is also not really anything you’d call a Bushism.

And “is our children learning” is definitely funnier because of the added implication that Bush hadn’t learned basic grammar….

Depends on how often Obama goes off teleprompter. When he has an off-night, he REALLY has an off-night!

Just watch. You’ll see.
