Woman eats 383 bowls of soba in 10 minutes

Some footage of this year’s Morioka city wanko soba eating contest:

The winner of the competition was a 44-year-old woman who downed 383 bowls of soba noodles in ten minutes.

Too bad they aren’t actual bowls of soba instead of mouthfuls.

That’s the point of the way wanko soba served in Iwate prefecture. A mouthful amount of soba is served in a small sized bowl. When it is finished, a server shouts and than immediately refills the bowl with more noodles. This continues until you can’t say you can’t eat any more. The average adult can eat between 40-60 bowls which gives an idea of how much this woman consumed.

The competition in Morioka draws on this but has servers providing new bowls of soba since there is a 15 minute time limit.

“Bowls” or as the rest of the world knows them as “teaspoons”.

Don’t you know famous Wanko Soba? Go to Morioka and try it. There are lots of restaurants that specialize in it. Ordinary adult man will vomit at around 100 “teaspoons”. Have fun.

Years ago I happened to be in Morioka and had a go at eating Wanko Soba. I don’t remember how many bowls I ate but I doubt I managed 38 let alone 383.

Hmmm

I have seen her on a heap of eating competition shows on TV in Japan… its quite a disturbing trend and there are always regular faces… most looking like her… can anyone say ‘bulimia’?
