U.S. to remove Misawa elephant’s cage

The U.S. military will probably take down the “elephant’s cage” at its Misawa Base, reports the Asahi Shimbun:
The antenna, said to be the largest in the Far East, was part of a worldwide network and used to monitor communications from the former Soviet Union, China and North Korea.
But the end of the Cold War, along with the shift to digital communications, has rendered the Wullenweber circular antenna array obsolete.
The facility, one of the last of its kind still in use, sits next to Misawa Air Base on a plot of land of about 2.34 square kilometers.
Apparently it’s not the only obsolete U.S. military communications device left gathering rust in Japan: Big Red Dot has posted some cool photos of an old abandoned USAF base in Fuchu.
