Why do people commit suicide in Japan?
Kyodo News has reported about statistics published in a new Japanese government white paper:
Of the 33,093 people who killed themselves last year, the government categorized 23,209 people whose suicide causes were determined.
Health problems led the list, occupying 63.3 percent of the total, followed by economic and livelihood difficulties at 31.5 percent, family problems at 16.2 percent, work-related problems at 9.5 percent and problems related to love affairs at 4.1 percent.
Kyodo’s article does not mention statistics about methods of suicide, but an AP article from earlier this week states that the there has been a gigantic increase in suicide by homemade toxic gas:
The number of toxic fume suicides jumped to 876 from January to September compared to 29 last year..
It is not clear whether this represents an increase in overall suicides, or just a shift away from other methods. The government has responded to the problem by pouring $220 million into anti-suicide programs.
