Taro Aso, who is expected to win the election later this month and become Prime Minister, appears to have angered the residents of one city in Aichi Prefecture:

During a campaign speech in front of JR Nagoya Station, Aso touched on August’s heavy rain in central Japan and said, “It was lucky that the disaster hit (smaller cities of) Anjo and Okazaki. If a similar-scale disaster hit Nagoya (which is one of Japan’s largest business centers) all the areas around here would have been flooded,” according to the officials.

The Okazaki city government has officially protested.

It’s not the first time that he’s said something that offends a small group, and it’s unlikely to have any effect on his chances of easily winning the LDP election.

    Update: Aso has apologized.
