Japanese children using school buses

Kyodo reports that there are over 4,700 school buses in use in Japan, and some 130,000 students at public elementary and junior high schools use them:

More than 40 percent of the boards said they have introduced school buses to protect children from crime and traffic accidents, according to the survey by the Ministry of Education, Culture, sports, Science and Technology.

Thirty-nine percent of the respondents said they use school buses for the convenience of children living in remote areas.

As nostalgic as that image is, surely that’s not what the Japanese school districts are using? Does anyone have an image of an elementary or middle school Japanese school bus? I’ve only seen micro-buses adorned with cartoon characters used for shuttling preschoolers around.

My rural district could really use a bus to save time and money. There’s one remote school that currently has only 10 students! I don’t know why they don’t just bus those kids to the next-closest school where there’s plenty of room for them.

If you wait till tomorrow I can take pictures. There are 2 coming by my place every day. But those are for children with special needs.

But they are not as standardised as in the USA.

it is news because children risk life and limb walking on busy and/or narrow streets to get to schools in this country. there should be more buses. there are too many reports of children injured on their way to and from schools.

i always thought they rode their personal robots to school.

The shool route safety really varies between districts.

In my ward all school routes are blocked to traffic in the morning(a road that has a safety barrier). There are also crossing guards(PTA members) at the major intersections.
