Guinness recognizes Japanese song download record

The above-embedded song has been downloaded on Japanese mobile phones over 2 million times, earning it an official recognition from Guinness:

Thelma Aoyama’s hit “Soba ni Iru ne” is currently the best-selling song as a full mobile download (chaku-uta) in Japan. That title has now been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records, and Aoyama has been presented with her certificate.

The Japanese language article about this notes the Guinness record is for Japan (“日本で最も売れた着うたフル楽曲”). Is it a Guinness Local Record instead of a Guinness World Record?

I was speculating maybe the song got so popular because this kind of songs were rare in Japan.. when I heard it on TV right after I came from the U.S., I didn’t find anything special about it, so with Namie Amuro’s newest song..

I agree with Irene – the song was nothing more, nothing less than your average, run of the mill, bog-standard, utterly generic, syrupy pop song.

Also, who else thinks that her white fur “hat”* verges on the ridiculous?

However, to be fair to Miss(?) Aoyama, her English accent sounds impeccable throughout.

*If the word “hat” could even be used to refer to such a monstrously imposing piece of headgear.

She lived in Los Angeles 2 years..she speaks English.

And all in all, this isn’t really all that surprising. It’s currently the top selling song by a female in Japan in 2008
