Man burns down temple trying to kill hornets

September 5th, 2008 by James

A monk in Niigata tried to beat some hornets with a homemade torch, but ended up burning down his temple:

The 41-year-old tried to burn out a hornet’s nest on top of a cupboard in his temple in the central Japanese province Niigata with a home-made bamboo torch.

However, the cupboard caught fire as the angry insects defended their home and attacked the scared priest. The fire soon spread to the rest of the building. While the priest only suffered light burns, the temple burnt down completely.

As you can see, the monk now has minor burns covering much of his face, giving him a creepy appearance as he explains the situation to the press. He says that he had not been expecting the hornets to go after him, and their sudden attack shocked him into dropping the torch and starting the fire that eventually burned down the temple.

An expert consulted by Fuji TV points out the obvious: fire is not a smart way to treat hornet infestations. If you have a problem with hornets in your home, please consult a professional before trying to burn your house down!

The image the first video shows before you play it is classic.

He’s like “no really, let me show you, it was like this, and they were all… and I had to…”

Those aren’t bandages – It’s the plaster mold used as a base for his Halloween Ultraman costume.

Has he ever thought about going to the store for a can of bug spray or maybe call the pest control?

Poor guy. I once tried to get rid of a suzumebachi nest in Chiba with a vacuum cleaner, and I thought that was pretty stupid. We’re both runners up for the Darwin, but he’s a little ahead of me.

as a monk he should have left the hornets alone. this is karma and in part a bit of stupidity on the “monks” part

I think this is the work of a demon, I’m not sure which one, though.

See, maybe the demon clouded his mind so that he would reason that burning the nest indoors would be a good Idea, and then took possession of the hornets to attack him.

At least, that’s what I would’ve done…
