WWII Anime: Nazi zombies & Soviets with superpowers

September 2nd, 2008 by James

Just came across this interesting trailer for a new anime video series set in the Soviet Union during World War II:

Japanator describes it as the following:

First Squad is made by the Russian-Canadian collaboration known as Molot Entertainment. It is being directed by Yoshiharu Ashino who also directed Tweeny Witches’ and Mind Game. World War II anime are always super, and this one is extra great because it takes place on the Soviet side of the conflict. Nazi’s have dug up and resurrected crusaders to fight for their cause, and the only thing to protect the world are a bunch of Soviet teenagers with special powers.

More details can be seen at the official First Squad website.

The animation looks tight, but that is the worst, and most blatant Prodigy rip-off I have ever heard.

Apparently the music is by DJ Krush, whom I’ve heard of, but am not familiar with. And yeah, it does sound like Prodigy, although I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say “ripoff”.

So does all of this start because Nicholas Cage finds a crusader pipe on a ship in the antarctic? This looks really nice, is it supposed to be a one-shot OAV/movie sorta deal, or a series?

Hopefully it goes easy on the russian nationalist propaganda. Otherwise, looks good.
