U.N. to designate Hakuho as ‘champion for sport’
Sumo Yokozuna Hakuho has been given a special honor by UNSESCO:
The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will designate Mongolian sumo wrestler Hakuho as a “champion for sport,” the international organization said Sunday.
UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura will visit the Tokyo stable to which Hakuho belongs Tuesday to present the title, under which Hakuho will take part in UNESCO’s sports promotion and antidoping campaigns.
Hakuho, who is a grand sumo champion in Japan, will be the first Asian to receive the title.
The article states that Hakuho will be given the title because he had participated in UNESCO activities in the past. I guess that Asashoryu didn’t take part in those activities?
