English teacher makes Japanese kids pose for “shocker” photo

I was oblivious of this gesture until now. do people really use it?

The wonders of JET and its lack of credential requirements. Just being a native speaker doesn’t make you teacher material, as evidenced by this guy.

So is this one of the “elite” JET people, or a lowly ALT from some mercenary private outfit which screws the teachers by keeping their summer pay?

Talk about blowing things out of proportion.

School photo’s since the invention of the photo has always been chock full of stupid faces, weird poses (as in “mooning”), and dorky hand gestures. Except for not having a oh so precious school photo for that year (which even if it was perfect, no one except the grandparents will ever look at again) what’s the big deal?

Agree, to humiliate a innocent students who they had trust and they throught he was a friend and a teacher is a shame. I am not sure what a good punishment will be appropriate for this teacher is but I hope will be something he will never forget.

Nothing wrong with a bit of sport. When most people study a foreign language there is great curiousity about how to express one’s self in both sexual filthy and abusively obscene manners. These children mastered an intermediate level obscene gesture, but earn no extra credit due to culturally inappropriate facial expressions. A B+ effort.

Let me ask;
What if this teacher tricked American elementary school kids who didn’t understand the meaning into making the gesture and took a photo and post it on the Internet?

I’m more of the “will nobody think of all the other folks trying to do their jobs and live in Japan in the face of yet another guy being immature and kind of douche-y and possibly giving folks yet another reason to think badly of foreigners.”

So, you know, different. And yeah, the rest of us who live in Japan and/or teach shouldn’t have to deal with the ramifications of other foreign folks who do dumb shit, but I think when you’ve lived here a little bit one of the things you notice is how everybody is tarred with the same stupid brush, regardless of culpability.

I don’t think anybody is saying these kids are scarred for life or anything, but IF he DID fake out the kids into doing the “shocker” just cause he thought he was being clever – and we don’t know any of that for sure – but yeah, if that’s the case, that’s just a dick move.

Or it’s the ASU mascot gesture, the “two devil’s horns and tail”. Because the shocker is supposed to be with the fingers touching, not spread apart as in this photo.

This illustrates once again why children should never be entrusted to a man in a Canadian tuxedo.

It’s funny how so many people completely and utterly hate a person to the point of wanting to harm him in some way by watching a single picture which they know NOTHING about but what they are seeing.

Yes, you hear the news that Japanese teachers molested students just as you hear that kind of news in U.S.
But it is far from the truth that it is becoming more and more with extracurricular activity.
It is this kind of attitude, together with a teacher on the photo, that pisses the Japanese off.
As someone said, I understand that he is an exception, he might have been a good teacher, he might have done it as just a joke, yeah, there are fucked up Japanese too;still, what he did was wrong.

The second woman from the left on the back is probably a teacher.
I didn’t know what this pose meant and few Japanese know it.
If he did it to his Japanese friends at his age, well, that might be okay: if he had explained what it meant after that, probably they would have had a good laugh.
But he tricked his students into making the gesture.
It was wrong,and he definitely promoted a negative image of gaijin teacher, gaijin in Japan..

if not for the guy’s originality, no one would even have noticed this. middle fingers are obscene too.

i encourage you to research a legally broadcast & legally purchasable American TV program called “Wonder Showzen”. it features 100% real young child actors doing & saying all sorts of more horribly obscene things. for example, one episode features a child fantasizing about finding a switchblade in his chicken nuggets. there’s another episode where the children kill, barbecue & eat God. these kids are also smiling & having fun in front of the camera, but i think you should spout off about this, too.

You know what infuriates me to no end are people like you insist on comparing this to the child-pornography, as if that had any bearing whatsoever on the issue at hand. The point I am trying to make is whatever else happening in Japan, what he did was wrong.

While everyone gets whipped up into an indignant fury over this, they manage to ignore much more serious issues that permeate the educational industry in particular and society as a whole.

So what does it have to with the case in question?

Suppose this was done to the American students at the same age who happen to be ignorant of the meaning of gesture like the students in Amish country, it is still wrong even if “this incident barely registers on the significance meter in regards to sketchy things happening in the educational industry” No?

You also need to give the Japanese a bit more credit. The vast majority of Japanese people aren’t so stupid that they cannot see the difference between this one jerkoff and foreigners as a whole.

As I said on my first comment, I didn’t want to comment on this post. I saw the criticisms by foreigner’s community, As long as they know the wrong he did, that would be sufficient enough. Some
of the comment might have been too harsh but the fact remains that he is an exception. But when someone started trying to justify his act by citing other wrongs by Japanese, I had to step in. “Was this guy not an exception but are many foreigner in Japan doing similar things by thinking “hey this is Japan where teachers do pervert things without punishment, all kinds of child-porno is available etc..

Again as I said, what this guy did was a minor problem. After all few Japanese understand the meaning.
But what he and a friend of his has done could be insulting to the Japanese people if he didn’t do this kind of things in his own country because it was morally wrong or it angered the parents etc, but if he did it in Japan; he is not treating the Japanese people as equal people as the people in his own country. And whether he would do it in his own country or not, they are treating the Japanese student as a means to be made fun of, exploiting student’s ignorance. That is wrong.
How wrong? Some people said,”fire him”. Other people said he should get the same treatment as Japanese teacher. I think that is fair. And my opinion is that all he has to do is just say sorry to his school and take down the photos.

That is the main point. He most likely tricked them into doing this gesture.

I remember I did something similar on an exchange trip to Quebec, WHEN I WAS ELEVEN YEARS OLD! I had an excuse.

If he’s a JET, the whole point of the program originally was cultural exchange, where foreign teachers get paid a very nice salary for very little work, to expose Japanese to foreign culture and vice versa.
Maybe it’s just me, but teaching rude hand gestures is not “culture”. But this guy can’t even claim he was teaching an aspect of the culture, because he probably told them it meant something else, like some sports team salute.
