Russian spy ship spotted off Okinawa

August 9th, 2008 by James

Russia might be busy invading Georgia right now, but they’ve still got the resources to spy on the U.S. military in Japan:

Russian navy intelligence ship has been in the Pacific off Okinawa’s main island, possibly to monitor radio wave data from the U.S. forces in Okinawa, the Defense Ministry’s Joint Staff Office said Friday.

A Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer found the 4,500-ton ship moving and stopping repeatedly in the high seas some 30 to 60 kilometers east of the island from around 2 p.m. Wednesday. The vessel stopped its engine and began floating at around 3 p.m. Thursday at a point some 70 km east of the southern tip of the island.

“Russian navy intelligence ship has been in the Pacific off Okinawa’s main island, possibly to monitor radio wave data from the U.S. forces in Okinawa, the Defense Ministry’s Joint Staff Office said Friday”

Why would they need a ship at sea to monitor radio when they could do it from the comfort (and cheapness) of their onshore embassy?

If the spy ship is stopping it’s engines, they’re looking for subs, not radio traffic (which any US voice/data traffic is encrypted beyond Russia’s ability to decode).

“(which any US voice/data traffic is encrypted beyond Russia’s ability to decode).”

Oh, don’t be so sure…

That said, it’s probably subs they’re looking for. Or maybe underwater cables?

Yes, I’m oh so silly. So Mr. Wizard, please explain in simple words for my goofy mind how exactly Russia or anyone else for that matter can decrypt US Military Encryption (voice or data). Did I miss the memo where someone invented a time machine or a practical (and working) quantum computer?

I don’t get what you’re trying to say. What do a time-machine or a quantum computer have to do with Russia or anyone else decrypting US military codes?

I’m not an expert, but I assume US military encryption is already to the point where either brute-forcing it (the basic method of trying all possible combinations in order until one gets a “hit”) would theoretically take eons using the best conventional computing hardware, or require a working quantum computer (which is suited for decryption since their defining characteristic is to be able to compute an almost limitless amount of combinations at the same time).

Of course, knowing how Russians were and probably still are one of the best spies on the planet (seriously), I’d rather just assume they’ve already stolen the decoder ring from the cereal box.

I’d be very surprised if any country had reached a level of encryption technology that couldn’t be broken by anything except a quantum computer or massively parallel computing supercomputers.

There’s quantum cryptography, which exploits the quantum nature of light (photons) to transmit messages, and is practically uncrackable. Not only that, but any attempt to crack it by a third party will immediately be detected.

But please. The US military is not using quantum cryptography; certainly not every branch of it.

War just broke out in the Caucasus

Heavy fighting in South Ossetia
Quote:
Georgian forces and South Ossetian separatists have been exchanging heavy fire just hours after agreeing to a ceasefire and Russian-mediated talks.

Russian media reports said Georgia had launched a tank-led attack on the separatist stronghold of Tskhinvali, with at least 15 killed in shelling.

Georgia says its aim is to finish “a criminal regime” and restore order.

Moscow has called on the international community to jointly work “to avert massive bloodshed and new victims”.

At Russia’s request, members of the UN Security Council are holding a rare emergency session to discuss a response to the escalating violence.

Oh, those Georgians. They have a right to secure their country. But going up against the Russians?

I give them four days tops….

Well, it looks as though Georgia is bowing to overwhelming Russian military power. I actually thought they might be able to withstand the bear a little bit longer. After all, Russia has been stymied by a tiny nation before.

But no, no Chechnya this time, it seems.

When reading US-affiliated news on Georgian issue, be aware that Georgia is USA pet regime in Caucasus region. Current georgian president ‘Mishiko’ Saakashvili came into power after US-inspired ‘rose revolution’ in 2003. He received 96% (!) votes in elections which followed shortly and were dubbed legitimate&democratic by USA. Ever after he served fervently as ‘our bastard’ for his US masters, mad dog ready to bite Russia anytime. In recent years, Georgia built up its army under US instructors’ supervising and raised its military budget several times, buying armament from Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Ukraine and Israel.

Now it seems he either went mad literally, or was forewarned that Russia won’t interfere. Either way he probably aimed to frighten Ossetian people, ‘punish’ them for ’separatism’ and just purge them from ‘Georgian land’. Otherwise what did he order to raze main city of Tskhinval for? Georgian forces attaked peacekeeping batallion stationed in Tskhinval and started artillery bombardment of the city.

So when Russian army at last reached Tskhinval in est. 12 hours August 8, there was ruins and many dead bodies under them, body count reached 2,000 and growing. Russian peacekeeping battalion was blocked and under heavy fire, they reported 15 dead and 150 wounded. So first tasks of Russian army were deblocking of pecekeepers and then dislodge Georgian troops from the city to allow rescue teams to begin their work.
