Friendly Beijing cop greets visitors in Japanese (and other languages)
With all the negative news posted in the last couple days, I’d hate to give this site’s readership the impression that all the media coverage about China on Japanese TV is bad news. There are actually plenty of positive reports about the Olympics, such as the following Fuji TV report about a friendly Beijing police officer:
The police officer has been studying English for years, and in preparation for the Olympics he learned to greet tourists in 13 different languages, including Japanese. The Japanese news cameras follow him around while he chats with foreigners in French and English, apparently well enough for them to understand what he’s saying. The police officer tells the Japanese reporter that he has studied foreign languages so he can introduce foreigners to the changes going on in Beijing.
The Japanese reporter closes the segment by mentioning that a survey showed about a third of Beijing residents were interested in learning English. However, most foreign tourists have said that they have encountered very few individuals that speak any English, and they find themselves using gestures and pointing to words in guide books to communicate with locals.

that beijing cop really brought some hope for Beijing.
He’s so awesome!
He is great. Yeah, and he looks friendly.
He might as well learn Korean too, otherwise….
Anyway, my crystal ball says that if Japanese athletes over-perform at Beijing, the media here will at least partially praise that on China, by having Japanese experts declare that the friendly Chinese cop was encouraging.
It’s good that he learned it but I’m Spanish and I had to listen it 3 times to understand what was he saying. At first I didn’t know if it was Spanish or Chinese.
damn his swedish was better then i expected
They find ONE somewhat literate and friendly cop among 10’s or even 100’s of thousands and we’re all supposed to feel warm and fuzzy and give China a nice pat on the back.
Ummmm…..no.
I don’t know about you, but I feel all warm and fuzzy from this report. I think it’s cute that the policeman memorized a phrase in 13 languages for his job. I’d give him a pat on the back just for the effort.
And FYI, cynicism takes years off of your life.
Even I have to admit it’s a nice story.
I just wonder if he also knows how to say,
“Sorry we beat and kicked you and confiscated your camera.”
and
“That’s not air pollution, it’s mist.”
in each language.
ZING!
Sorry, but I still believe that China is not making a good job with this olympic games.
I still believe that they need to imporve their quality and respect the human rights, because that was just a merre image for me. Who can tell me that it is a true thing? Who can tell that all cops like this guy have this training?
Ofc not, you live in a barrel? And ofc China is a shithole, this is just something positive for a change. And yay for Finland.
I also agree that it’s refreshing to have a nice story for a change. Not that we should cut the Chinese government any slack, but people need to differentiate between government and people. There were friendly, kind, compassionate Nazis, too. Just because the political party sucks doesn’t mean that all of the people do, especially in a country so populous as China.
Well… I hate to bring up this little debate again, but in a similar vein to S.Korean foreign affairs is this little news article…
http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/nation/2008/08/136_28982.html
I wonder how S.Korea can worry about relations with other countries (Japan -Liancourt / USA -beef) when they cannot sort out smaller issues with the -brothers- to the north?
Hey…posted that in the wrong web page!!!
My error!
