Fukuda downsizing to smaller jet for Olympic visit

August 4th, 2008 by James

The Asahi Shinbun reports that Fukuda will be the first Japanese Prime Minister to use a small jet as transportation for an overseas trip:

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda will use a smaller aircraft to fly to Beijing next Friday, instead of the government’s official jumbo jet, to underline Japan’s commitment to cutting carbon dioxide emissions, sources said.

Fukuda will fly aboard a 19-passenger Air Self-Defense Force U-4 utility aircraft to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, the sources said.

It’s a shame it’s an unarmed military aircraft. He has a chance to finish what the Japanese started back in the 1930’s.
