Flash flood in Kobe

Video camera footage from a recent flood in Kobe provides a scary reminder of the fact that urban rivers can be very dangerous:

The Togagawa river flows from the Rokko mountain range through the hilly city. When rains struck suddenly on Monday, the river turned into a raging torrent that claimed four lives, including those of three children.

Most days, it is a gentle stream surrounded by concrete that has become a cool oasis for citizens. But disaster struck when it turned into a muddy flood. It is as though a docile pet suddenly bared its fangs.

This disaster reminded me once again that even urban rivers are a part of nature.

As more people take to the outdoors for fun activities, many are heading to artificially designed places where they can get in touch with “quasi-nature.” These include well-equipped campgrounds and water parks. But we must never let our guard down.
