Japan Photo of the Week: Hakodate

If you are looking to escape the heat and humidity of Japan, Hokkaido is the place to be in the summer. There are many places worth visiting and summer time is the perfect time for a lot of these places. This week I am sharing Hakodate with you.

To be completely honest, Hakodate might be kind of a hit and miss place for you. From what I understand, there are two great things about Hakodate, seafood and the view from the top of Mount Hakodate (often said to be one of the best night views in Japan). For me, I am not a huge fan of seafood and the 2 days I was there it was very cloudy (especially at night) so it was kind of a miss for me. The day I was leaving, I did have a few hours of sunshine where I was able to take this shot, but I am sure some of you have much better shots than I have! There is a wonderful old foreigners’ graveyard in Hakodate which includes someone from Commodore Perry’s crew as one of the ‘residents’, surrounded (if my imagination does not fail me) by a white picket fence and with Russian names on some of the stones. There’s an orthodox church there too, and there are lovely old wooden houses down the main street. In Hakodate, there were about a dozen POW camps during the war, and there are all sorts of places to explore there. And the people I met there were open and friendly.

The top of Hakodate also had these gigantic microwave towers that in the US you wouldn’t be able to get within hundreds of yards of. I remember in the evening they had these booths under it selling food. Doubt they had to heat anything themselves.

Nice, so what is the Hokkaido region’s weather like in the summer temperature-wise? 20-30 degrees celcius? Comparable to the Pacific North West? Northern Europe? A frame of reference would be great. =D

Hokkaido is pretty big so from place to place could vary a lot on any given day, but just as a starting point, Sapporo (the largest city in Hokkaido) has an average of about 23 celcius in August. In general, and more importantly, it is less humid than the rest of Japan during the summer and there is less of a rainy season. Seriously, the humidity is the worst part of Japan’s summers, not the heat.

If you are not into seafood, I’d recommend the local humberger store called “Lucky Pierrot”. Their “Chinese Chicken Burger” is very nice.
