Kagoshima streetcar lane goes green
Fuji TV reports on Kagoshima city’s decision to plant grass in its streetcar lanes:
Local officials launched the project with the hope that it would improve scenery and cut down on the heat island effect caused by so much concrete. The response from tourists and residents have been very positive. The grassy track is currently 2.8km in length, covering a section of Kagoshima’s downtown area, but it is expected to extend to a length of 8.9km by 2012.

Great idea, I hope the yamanote follows suit.
This is kinda dangerous, especially if the grass grows slightly over the metal track and the trams have to break. Which will not work or work rather less efficiently. Great for the people/cars/strollers ending up under the streetcars.
They’ve had this going for a while – it really does make a noticeable difference in the city.
looks great. don’t think the grass will effect braking – I’m sure it’ll be well maintained. Wonder how ‘eco’ the cutting methods are though…
Love the DEPAPEPE background music.
