Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea is a hit

July 21st, 2008 by James

Jason Gray reports that Hayao Miyazaki’s latest film is having a very nice opening weekend:

First day attendance figures, up until afternoon matinee shows, compared to Spirited Away (biggest hit in Japanese history at 30.4 billion yen): 83%. Mathematically this works out to a 25.23 billion yen (US$235.9 million) final total. Although this type of math is popular in the media here, totals almost always end up being less.

Nonetheless, Ponyo is on course to become Miyazaki’s, and the territory’s, 2nd biggest hit ever.

More info on Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea can be found in these Yomiuri and AFP articles.

I saw it last night in Nagano. I enjoyed it a lot, but compared to most of his other films, this one felt very much more geared towards children.

But in a way that was good for me as it meant I could understand most of the Japanese no problem ;-)

Definitely worth a watch. And I especially liked the hand-drawn scenery, which felt unusual what with CG everywhere these days.

As you say it looks like one for the little kids. More like Ampanman level than the usual Miyazaki stuff.

A Ghibli movie is a hit and is reported by the sponsors as so as well.
In other news, water is wet and the sky is blue. More at 11.

So, this number is bigger than the screening of Batma, which opened to the largest box office of all time. In a country that has 10 times the screen volume of Japan and three times the population.
And yet we are to believe the number? This kind of number would make it seem like every single screen in Japan was completely sold out and only playing Ponyo all weekend. And even still that wouldn’t hit it. I’m as big as a Miyazaki fan as the next dude, but that number needs a serious audit if they’re going to simply toss it out there…

I can’t see what’s wrong with the numbers. Numbers were what Spirited Away made in total (30 billion yen), and what Ponyo might make (25 billion). Not its weekend gross.
