One thing my father-in-law told me (before he died), was that people are essentially compelled, via peer pressure, to get a posthumous name - the names of the deceased are posted on wooden tablets on the walls of the family temple, and other people in the community can see who ponied up for the name, and those who did not.

In my experience, Japanese funerals are just as tacky as are Japanese weddings, but instead of leaving a saccharine aftertaste (as the weddings do), are truly horrible experiences. Nightmarish.

It's nice to see people are realizing that paying that much for posthumous names are starting to get a price drop...I had read about all these atrocious prices one time.

But I'll miss my temples if they close down :'(

Fascinating. Again, these kinds of articles regarding demographic, social, and societal changes in Japan is what keeps me coming back here. If anyone else here has other good sources for this kind of news and information, your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
