Miss Japan makes top 15 at Miss Universe 2008

Miss Universe Japan 2008 Hiroko Mima was selected as one of the top 15 contestants at today’s Miss Universe pageant, but the crown ultimately went to Miss Venezuela. Hiroko Mima had been a popular choice among online gamblers, some of whom may have expected Japan to win the contest two years in a row.

Wow, lets hear it for Miss Western Standard of Beauty. Seriously, she looks so very… not Japanese. I would not have guessed at her being Japanese from these pictures (sash not withstanding). I don’t even know if I’d have pegged her as Asian. (I’m terrible at placing faces, accents, and fashions already anyway, I suppose)

I’m not saying she’s fugly or anything, but it seems to me that to participate in Miss Universe you have to appeal to a Western perception of beauty (something along the lines of a curvaceous bronzed goddess or some such), which discourages people looking like their native ethnicity.

Oh well. It’s just a big beauty pageant, I suppose very few people really care.

You are correct. They have a Fro…French coach, or whatever that job description is, and she makes the final decision about who will enter the contests. She purposefully chooses girls who will appeal to the largely Western judges and judging standards. There was a documentary about this on the telEvision some months back.

I think you are right though, the beauty pageant is often judged based on mostly Western standard of beauty. In the end though, it is just a shallow beauty pageant. You are also right about that.

I wouldn’t say they are all ugly but I don’t see the point really in such contests.
Beauty is defined by one’s own perception and can’t really be objectively measured.

About this years Miss Japan and last year’s Miss Universe, I must agree that they both don’t look very Japanese.

Hiroko Mima looks hot. But I find ordinary Japanese gravure idols are much attractive than Miss Japan.

miss universe contest per se is a failure. You can already say by the fact it’s not the most prettiest, sweetest or most charismatic girls were put in top positions (they put miss US on top 15, miss Japan was last year’s winner, etc…)

It seems that this contest is a chance to give ugly and rejected girls a chance in their lives although there are some pretty girls. My top picks would be Miss Indonesia and Miss Honduras.
