16 melons wounded in vicious knife attack

The crime rate is dropping in Japan, but media coverage of scary crimes seems to be at an all-time high. Today Asahi TV’s national news reported on a supermarket in Yamanashi Prefecture discovering knife slashes on 16 melons that had been on display in front of the store:

My god, what kind of inhuman monster would do such a thing! If they catch the culprit, I demand the death penalty.
For who painstakingly raised those melons and retailers who sell them at a high price is utterly offensive.

I notice that they listed the cost of the loss at ~8000 yen. That’s about 500 yen per melon. That poor poor retailer, who probably was selling them for 2500 yen per melon, as is usual.
